Martin John, Founder of Star & Light Media

My journey

Founding up Light & Star Media has been, in many ways, a lifetime's endeavour. As is said, all your experiences lead you to this moment.

I have worked in a wide variety of sectors and jobs, which perhaps as a millennial is 'on trend'. Even so, I confess that my CV looks a bit messy and confusing! But two recurring themes do keep emerging 1) the charity sector 2) music and creative media.

My charity work has taken me to several African countries: Kenya, Eswatini, South Africa and Ghana. Closer to home, I have volunteered in a homeless charity that provides accommodation, food and mental health support to people who would otherwise be on the street. In recent years I have been a fundraising manager for two UK-wide charities.

My music and creative media work has taken me down an entirely different path: as a live musician and wedding DJ, and as a music producer, audio editor and sound engineer.

Then in early 2024, questioning what I finally wanted to do with my life, as an early forty-something... once a millennial, always a millennial... I had a kind of 'epiphany moment' and realised it was time to combine my love of helping people with my love of being creative.

It actually happened whilst working as a fundraiser. I thought, if only funders and donors could see and hear the impact that our charity's work had rather than reading through yet another letter, email or application form.

I spent the next twelve months investing in all the necessary equipment, studying and training myself up, using my prior knowledge in music and audio production to compliment my new skillset.

Having worked and volunteered in the charity sector on and off for over two decades, I firmly believe that charities are the most likely agents of progressive social change. I also believe that audio-visual media is one of the most powerful tools for charities to achieve their goals. So bringing both of these passions together was a nobrainer, and makes me very excited to launch Light & Star Media.
